Coaching Philosophy

My approach

I tend to be best placed to help those who are plateaued intermediate lifters; they’ve got relatively strong from the ‘usual’ approach—training hard using percentage-based, traditional block periodisation—but, despite continuing to train hard, they’ve hit a bit of a wall.

To go beyond this, my coaching adopts a highly individualised approach: it’s built from the ground up, based on athlete response.

My coaching is based on the following areas

A scientific, data-driven and evidence-based approach

I’m interested in optimising your technique based on physics and biomechanics.

I value quantitative tools to help make better training decisions: think custom RPE charts and velocity profiles.

I use my experience in conjunction with the latest developments in exercise science research.

Competition standards

I draw on my several years as a referee to provide a ‘ref’s eye’ on your lifting—and, how we can tailor your training to target any relative weaknesses which might be costing you white lights.

Whole-athlete

I view lifting as being as much mental as it is physical (and I don’t love the idea of dividing a person into mind/body in the first place!)

I aim to provide a robust conceptual framework based on established principles of strength training that doesn’t ignore subjective feeling, but rather uses it to our advantage to manage fatigue and drive long-term progress.

Long-term autonomy

I don’t see myself as a coach who will tell you what to do, but rather a coach who can give you the tools so that you can start to figure out what to do for yourself.

Think of it as being a bit like this: you’re in the driver’s seat, and I’m the navigator.
